The Golden State is Entirely Free of Drought for the First Time in 25 Years.
For the first time in 25 years, not a single part of the state is experiencing drought conditions. This significant achievement comes on the heels of difficult years marked by a lack of precipitation that intensified blaze threats and challenged its enormous farming industry.
A Chart Shows Zero Dryness
The latest assessment from the national drought tracker confirmed that the entire state is without drought or abnormal dryness. This development came after a period of heavy precipitation that topped up major reservoirs like the state's largest lakes well above their long-term norms.
“If you’re 25 or younger you’ve only known in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” stated a climate scientist.
After Severe Systems to Wet Holidays
The path to this point featured severe and lethal winter storms that pummeled the state in recent years, causing significant overflow, electrical failures, and deaths. While those storms helped ease the drought, they fell short of ending it.
Even into late December, regions like Modoc County were deemed abnormally dry. Subsequent downpours at the beginning of January washed away those final dry conditions.
The Vital Sierra Snow Presents a Challenge
However, hydrologists note that drought-free conditions does not mean complete water security. Latest data of the mountain snow accumulation place it at roughly seven-tenths of the historical norm.
This frozen reservoir, which supplies approximately 30% of the state's water supply as it melts in the spring, is a key piece for future water availability. Hydrology managers stress that it is premature to determine the outlook for the months ahead.
“The current pattern right now is a higher ratio of rain to snow,” commented a state water resources manager. “We’d like to see the snow accumulation to improve by the start of April so that we’re nearer to normal.”
Although the monitor indicates no dryness, the next challenge is to maintaining this hard-won hydrological health during the rest of the year.
