‘Every minor detail – execute them’: The striker’s road from gurney to goals with Athletic

Thehe initial occasion the Athletic striker featured in England, an teenage appearing for the youth squad against Bundesliga youth at the English ground in fall 2015, he scored. The second time he took the field in British turf, against the Black Cats following that, he scored. The third time, against the Citizens soon after, indeed, he repeated the feat. As he revisited to the northwest to face United at Leigh’s ground in the 2017 season, he did it once more. A spectacular strike, also. “Actually,” he says, “it ranks among my finest in my career.” Therefore the team did what they had to do: they took him off.

“I was furious,” the forward says, before breaking into laughter. “There must be a video somewhere. We went to play United and I performed well. They kept me out of the final 45 minutes: my contract wasn’t finalized my contract, I kept finding the net, many stories circulated, it’s typical. I don’t know about the Magpies’ pursuit, but I recall seeing about the Red Devils, the usual talk. I have no idea if it was accurate, but had they contacted me, my desire was to remain at the club. I’m fortunate to be here.”

Real Sociedad release pressure with surreal victory in Basque derby like no other

At the training ground, the Basque Country, the day’s first practice is ready to commence; after it, the short journey to Loiu airport and another trip to England, this time to play Newcastle in the European elite competition on the upcoming match. Uttering the name brings a smile to his face. This is proving a difficult season for the team, partly because of the demands of being here. Losing in stoppage time in the derby on Saturday, they have won only one of their last eight matches and fallen to the Gunners and Dortmund in European competition. Yet, look at the overall situation, the memorable evenings and those that lie ahead, and there’s a kind of quiet appreciation within him.

In the 36 months since he had rejoined the team, the striker has been a Europa League semi-finalist, denied at the last hurdle a domestic final by Manchester United, and has traveled on a traditional boat up the Nervión estuary flanked by a huge crowd after securing the Spanish cup, the first title in four decades. Now he is the club’s leading marksman in the European competition, where they are unique and returning after absence in a decade. “This was beyond my dreams,” he states.

The player believed it hard enough just to break into the senior squad and that proved true. As the child of the one-time rival player the former professional and a regular attendee at the club that are now his rivals, Guruzeta is a product of Antiguoko, the Donostiarra team that produced the Arsenal manager, the legendary midfielder and Andoni Iraola. He signed for Athletic at his teens but after his first-team bow in August 2018, he experienced a ACL injury, dropped, a relegation and a recall before he could earn his place, making his comeback to experience the peak of his career.

Gorka Guruzeta in training
Gorka Guruzeta is preparing to face Newcastle in the Champions League.

“Entering the youth system not expecting to reach the senior squad but every phase you advance through you’re remaining and you can observe the approach. You get there but … you have to leave.” He featured briefly in six matches in six games between his bow and early 2019. “And then I go back down to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. A few matches with them and I suffered the ACL injury.

“It was a huge blow but I look back on it as a turning point because it forced me to alter the way I saw things. Healing from a serious ailment is hard, but it aids growth. You develop habits new to you. Previously I was casual, but I did the sessions and then return home, like when you’re a kid. At the complex, all resources are available, so utilize it all. Training, prehab. Hit the weights. With hip imbalance, address that. With decent ankle function, make it a 12 or a 14. All those ‘silly things’: perform them.

“Among professionals you’re going to collide with opponents who have been in battles repeatedly. Extremely powerful. Reviewing old images: my legs are chicken legs. Thus incidents occur. Look at pictures of me now and it’s totally different. Injury made me see that. Practice concludes, but further effort is needed. Peers are prepared, really ready; you have to be too.”

Minutes are crucial. The striker moved in tears in that year, at 23 years old, joining the second tier. During his Sabadell spell in that season, he got three strikes in forty appearances. With Amorebieta in the second half of 2021-22, the goals started to flow. “Many experience this: temporary moves, ended deals. If you turn it round, effort, faith, and when eventually a vacancy arises in your position, recall is possible. Readiness is vital. Upon the recall, it was a dream come true. The trophy success, play in Europe, and reach the Champions League … pfff.”

No wonder he says this is to be enjoyed. Especially after the previous season which, on occasions, was focused on persistence. After being leading scorer with sixteen goals, last season he got seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
